COMMUNITY- BANGLADESH

BANGLADESHI CULTURE

An industrious country that shares a rich cultural history with the people of India.

As a hierarchical society, the Bangladeshi people respect other based on their age and position.

Older people are well respected as sources of wisdom.

The most senior male of a group, by age or position, is expected to make leadership decisions that are in the best interest of the group.

Bangladeshi culture is influenced by the “Three Great Religions”: Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam

Islam has the most pervading and lasting impact, with 66% of people practicing this religion. As a cultural melting pot, Bangladesh is a happy blending of many religions, traditions, and practices.

A series of religious festivals are observed here. Muslims celebrate rites such as Eid-e-Miladunnabi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha, Muharram etc. Hindus celebrate Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Kali Puja and many other pujas.  Christians celebrate Christmas. Common festivities observed countrywide include Pahela Baishakh (the first day of Bangla year), Independence Day (26th March), 21st February (the National Mourning Day and World Mother Language Day), and the Victory Day (16th December).

Bangladeshi women habitually wear Sarees.  A saree is an outer garment made of about six (6) yards of fabric. Saree is usually wrapped around the waist over a petticoat with the left end made to hang over the head or shoulder.

A common hairstyle is Beni (twisted bun) that Bangalee women are fond of. Traditionally males wear Panjabis, Fatuas and Pajamas. Hindus wear Dhuty for religious purposes.
